Signs save time and lives. A 2017 study found that signs can change a person’s behavior for the better. A person is more likely to wear a seatbelt, protect their ears, and recycle their trash after seeing a sign.

One type of effective signage is wayfinding signage. You see dozens of wayfinding signs every day without realizing it. If you want people to be comfortable with your business, you need to know what they are.

What are the essentials of wayfinding signage? What are their four main categories? How can you create effective signs?

Answer these questions, and you can help customers find their way into your business. Here is your quick guide.

What Is Wayfinding Signage?

As the name indicates, wayfinding signage help people find their way around a location. It is not for advertising or promoting purposes, though it can help with branding.

Signs are basic. They may contain a name of a room or building and an arrow pointing in its direction. Some signs are color-coded to categorize different rooms together.

Identification

Identification is the most common form of indoor wayfinding signs. Identification signs let people know that they have reached a destination.

A plaque on a wall featuring a room number is a wayfinding sign. Labels on a meat case divider also count.

Most of these kinds of signs feature a name or number and nothing else. But you are not limited to mere identification.

You can include a company logo or name. This is very helpful in large office buildings where companies share spaces.

Informational

Informational signage provides a little more detail. A sign that indicates where a bathroom is counts as an informational one. Posters listing the hours of operation or the address are other examples.

Most informational signs contain symbols instead of words. To indicate a bathroom, the sign shows a stall. This allows people from all cultural backgrounds to understand what is inside.

Directional

Directional signs give people cues on where to go. A company directory is a great example. It shows what rooms are on each floor and what number is for each room.

But they can be very simple. A word next to an arrow gives a person a directional cue. This is great for event directional signage where people cannot stand and read long instructions.

Regulatory

Regulatory signs offer regulations. No smoking and danger signs are classic examples. They set boundaries for people, so they know how to behave when they get to a room.

Some signs contain words, while others offer hazard symbols. Design something that has both.

Regulatory signs are a common component of outdoor and park wayfinding signage. It is important to tell visitors what the regulations are before they enter.

Create the Best Wayfinding Signage

Wayfinding signage helps people figure out where they need to go. Identification signs indicate what each room is for. You should label your important departments and places like bathrooms.

Informational signs provide directions around a building. All multi-level structures should have at least one.

Directional signs give clear directions on where to go. An arrow next to a symbol is all you need. Regulatory signs give tips on what to do before entering a room.
